Frequently Asked Questions

Product and Timber Information

Learn about timber grades, treatment, storage, and cutting options before you buy.

What’s the difference between C16 and C24 timber?

Both C24 and C16 are kiln-dried softwoods, usually Spruce or Pine (the C stands for Conifer), and are graded to show their strength and quality.

C24 is stronger and generally of higher quality, allowing it to span wider distances than its C16 counterpart.

C16 may include more natural defects and is not as strong as C24, but it’s still suitable for structural applications.

When timber is stress-graded, any visible defects are taken into account under the grading rules. A defect doesn’t necessarily mean the timber is unfit for purpose, these grades are intended for structural, not aesthetic use.

All of our stock C24 timber is preservative-treated, whereas most of our C16 is not.

How should I store timber before use?

It’s good practice to keep timber stacked flat and off the ground in a dry, well-ventilated area. If stored outdoors, cover it loosely with a breathable sheet and avoid direct exposure to rain or prolonged damp conditions.

Do I need to treat pressure-treated timber?

No. Pressure-treated timber is already treated to resist rot, fungi, and insect attack.
However, if you cut or drill into treated timber, it’s essential to re-treat the exposed areas with an appropriate preservative.

Can I get my timber cut to size?

Yes. We offer a cutting service for most timber products.

What lengths does timber come in?

Most structural timber is available in lengths ranging from 2.4m to 7.2m, depending on the grade.Specific lengths are shown on each product page on our website.

Machined timbers (such as skirting, architrave, flooring, cladding, and planed timber) are typically supplied in lengths of 3.6m to 5.4m.
